Knowledge is not the same as morality, but we need to understand if we are to avoid past mistakes and move in productive directions. An important part of that understanding is knowing who we are and what we can do... Ultimately, we must synthesize our understandings for ourselves.
Howard Gardner (1999: 180-181)

Metacogntion is knowing about knowing. Knowledge of one's cognitive processes. Knowing how one thinks, processes information, learns, and the best way to show understanding and solve problems. Howard Gardner addresses metacogniton through the work he is most noted for and opens avenues for learners and educators to investigate and understand the concept.

Howard Gardner is a developmental psychologist based at Harvard whose book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (1983), focuses on his theory that there are multiple kinds of intelligences that people can posses.

Gardner initially identified seven (7) intelligences:
Bodily-Kinesthetic
Interpersonal
Intrapersonal
Linguistic
Logical - Mathematical
Musical
Spacial

He recently added:
Naturalistic

And is considering additional ones
Digital
Existential
Moral

This wiki will focus on eight (8) of the intelligences - the original seven (7) and naturalistic. Within this wiki you will find explanations of the intelligences, attributes of individuals with these intelligences, suggested classroom learning activities, assessments to show understanding, technology connection, and possible career paths.

Gardner's theory does not suggest that these types of intelligence are exclusive. An individual possesses most of them at varying degrees, some will express more prominently than others. There are several assessments available to help individuals identify their intelligence(s) according to Gardner's Theory. Educators who accept this theory may find it valuable to know their own intelligence(s) as well as those who they are working with or educating in order to provide optimal learning experiences and assessment results, meaning providing students the best opportunities to exhibit their understanding.
